As an IT worker, depending on your specific role in a team, you may not often be called on to prepare new systems or that may be mostly what you do. Either way, you should be able to install an operating system. It can come in handy more often than you think. On more than one occasion, in my freelance work, I’ve come across catastrophic errors and such that required the repair or re-installation of an operating system. In my opinion, Windows installs aren’t particularly difficult, but I don’t like resorting to them because it represents a failure on my part to resolve issues by less drastic measures. That being said, one should never forget that one’s results are higher priority than one’s hesitation to pursue an appropriate solution. But operating system installation is an important tool in your toolbox and though I would love nothing better than to walk you through the installation of some obscure flavor of Linux, that is unlikely to be particularly useful to you. Therefore, it’s going to be a clean install of Windows 10.
But how did you acquire Windows 10?
You can purchase a Windows 10 DVD or USB drive, but that’s not necessary. You can download the installation files from Microsoft. Here, in particular: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO. With that, you can burn an installation DVD or prepare a bootable USB drive. Either way, you should probably confirm that your BIOS/UEFI is configured to boot from whichever media you have prepared for this purpose. Also, take note of whether you are going for Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro. This will be important later. All of this being said, a DVD has less a chance of driver issues later.

When you boot into the installation media, you may be asked to select whether you want 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10. Though I can’t imaging that you will have a use case that requires 32-bit Windows 10, it is an option. Anyway, after this choice is made, you can enjoy the Windows logo. At least I hope you enjoy it, because it can take a while.
Next should be a screen where you select the language, time/currency format, and keyboard/input method. Once that’s done, it’s time to click on “Next” in the bottom right corner.

The next screen should basically include two options; to proceed with the installation and the ability to repair your Windows installation.

If you continue with the installation, you may then be asked to provide a product key. This is a fairly long, complicated key, which you would have received already, had you purchased a license or an official installation media. You actually don’t need it yet, but you should make it a priority to get one as soon as possible. If you don’t have one, next to the “Next” button on this screen should be a button that allows you to skip this for now.

You remember whether you were going for Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro? Now’s the time that becomes important. Worst case scenario, you, incredibly forget and you have to reinstall Windows. Best case scenario, you remember and you don’t have to do that.

Enjoy waiting as Windows 10 copies itself from the installation media.
Assuming there are no issues with drivers or the installation media, then it’s time to deal with partitions. If there are partitions, you should delete them. Then you select the unallocated drive on which to install Windows 10. Suddenly, more partitions! But we’re cool with these new partitions. The new “primary” partition is where we are installing Windows.

This is pretty much where your work ends. When the installation does end, you get to what amounts to a configuration page to help with some settings. But mostly, you are done. Congratulations!
